Heavy Metals and the Body: What You Need to Know

Heavy Metals and the Body: What You Need to Know

At Remarkable You Wellness, one of my core focuses as a naturopath is helping the body remove what doesn’t belong — toxins, chemicals, and especially heavy metals. These elements, including lead, mercury, arsenic, cadmium, and aluminum, are found all around us, and unfortunately, within us too.

Where Heavy Metals Come From

Heavy metals are not just an environmental concern; they are a daily exposure. We encounter them in:

  • The air we breathe

  • Medications, both prescription and over-the-counter

  • Cheap or poorly sourced supplements

  • Food and water

  • Vaccines

  • Food packaging and storage containers, especially aluminum cans

  • Cookware and utensils

  • And even household products and personal care items

This means our exposure is ongoing, often at levels that the body can manage for a while, until our internal systems become overwhelmed.

The Role of the Adrenal Glands

Your adrenal glands are two small but mighty organs that sit above your kidneys. They regulate hormones like cortisol and adrenaline, manage stress response, support energy production, and -  something less talked about - they help process and eliminate heavy metals.

However, when we are under chronic stress (mental, emotional, physical, or environmental), the adrenals become overworked. When that happens, one of the first functions they reduce is detoxification, meaning heavy metals can start to build up in the body.

These metals don’t just stay put. They can cross the blood-brain barrier, accumulating in brain tissue and contributing to neurological, hormonal, and immune challenges. Studies have even detected metals in umbilical cords and areas of soft tissue with cancer.

Heavy Metals and Candida

Another interesting connection is the relationship between heavy metals and candida (yeast) in the body. Heavy metals tend to bind to candida, forming a protective bond that makes it difficult to clear one without addressing the other. If you’ve ever struggled with recurring yeast overgrowth, brain fog, fatigue, or skin issues, it may not be just candida, heavy metals could be part of the root cause.

Supporting the Body’s Natural Detox Systems

The good news is this: the body was designed to heal. When we support it correctly, it knows what to do.

A clean lifestyle and strong foundations go a long way .That means:

  • Choosing clean, well-sourced supplements and foods

  • Supporting hydration, digestion, and mineral balance

  • Managing stress and allowing the adrenal glands to recover

  • Creating daily habits that promote detoxification naturally

At Remarkable You Wellness, we also utilize a variety of supportive therapies to help the body safely and effectively release these stored toxins:

  • FIR (Far Infrared) Sauna — promotes sweating, circulation, and cellular detox

  • Ionic Detox Foot Baths — help draw out impurities and balance the body’s energy field

  • Homeopathic and nutraceutical detox programs — customized for each individual

  • Guided support from a trained naturopath (that’s me!) — ensuring your body is supported and not overwhelmed during the cleansing process

A Final Thought

Heavy metals are part of our modern world, but they don’t have to define our health story. By building strong foundations, choosing clean products, and working with someone who understands the body’s natural healing processes, you can help your body do what it was created to do: restore, balance, and thrive.

Your body is remarkable, it just needs the right support at the right time.
